Why do my headphones keep doing this?

Every pair of headphones I get, one side stops working unless I pull the cord a certain way. Pretty soon, they both stop working unless I do that to the cord. I wrap my headphones around my ipod every day, but I do it gently. I keep getting really nice, expensive pairs and they keep doing this within the first few weeks of me owning them. What's the deal?
