Can i run my car without serpentine belt for a minute?

i have a 2000 firebird 3.8. there is a terrible sound coming from the area near the air conditioning compressor, to check if it truly is the air compressor can i start the car for a brief time to see if the noise stops before i go spend money on parts? thanks much
