Trans am starts then dies?

its a 1988 firebird trans am 305 tpi when i start it, it runs for a few seconds then dies, if i give it gas it doesn't stay on either but it stays on when i keep spraying starting fluid in it. so i bought a new fuel filter and this didnt help. could someone please help me. thanks
