My girlfriend is here in the U.S. through the au pair program are there other programs she can change to?

She is from Brazil. Through the au pair program she has a student work visa (max time is 2yrs). Her first year will be up in October. The program hasn't been a rewarding experience, so it's likely she won't extend. In Brazil she was a makeup artist. Her real pion. Is there any conceivable way she can find work on her own or change her visa status? I'm American and this process really opened my eyes to how difficult it is for normal people (without extenuating cirstances) to come here and try to be a (legal) part of society. HELP!
