Is the Catalic converter necessary on a 2001 Firebird?

My Catalic converter recently went out I was told it is not necessary to the performance of my Firebird and I should consider streightlining my exhaust because of expence. I would never comprimise my Firebird and want to do the best thing for my car. What are the repercussions of not replacing the converter?
